Check out the deep summer 3AM half-light vibe when the pads kick in on that mofe.

download

Pram 'Iron Lung e.p.' They are on some other primal naive shit altogether. "Cumulus" sprints out of the gate and makes a mad dash for the horizon. Lo-fi rhythmic guitar, percussion, and deranged two-note keyboard lines lock in a madcap loop, ending out-of-breath some six minutes later in stranger locales amidst the obscure dialogue of beeping, squaking kiddie toy instruments and other chattering weirdness. "Water Toy" slowly skips around in circles as vocalist/keyboardist Rosie Cuckson coos and purrs half-decipherable accounts of the things "in the shed," things presumably lonely and dreaming about the lost hours of the day playing with children. A tranquilizing elastic drone slips quietly into unconsciousness as the night eventually swallows the twilit world. The effect of this is something akin to eerie childhood fever dreams, invoking a feral world still tethered to the womb and the first psychodramas. "Pram/Iron Lung" presents a winsome melodica as Cuckson moans about the body horror and trap of pregnancy. The primal desire to be "free, a floating feather" returns as the dense, melancholic bleat of the melodica beckons a return back into the womb to the absolute.

The superb murky recording and production work here is courtesy of Justin Broadrick of Napalm Death and Godflesh infamy. One of his finest recording moments no doubt. Apparently recorded in an old mental institution for kids, the spirit of such a place hangs all over this record. Pram subsequently never really plumbed these depths again, making this all-the-more one-of-a-kind.

download

DJ dickaround Spring set

I did a mix in honor of this spring season. For me, the answer was 'Vae Solis' by Scorn. Some 4 years after the release of 'Scum,' the seminal Napalm Death lineup would reconvene as Scorn and deliver this aborted child. Picking up the fragments and shards of negative space left behind from thrash's corpse, they breathed an abstracted reanimating wind into their Frankenstein's monster. Inner spaces of angled ambient texture taunted laconically amidst the chatter of disembodied call-and-response samples and drum machine programming. And the groove.. Scorn turned to the time-warping tenets of dub reggae, as their post-punk forbears Joy Division, PIL, and Killing Joke had before them, to accentuate the space between the beat and used that in conjunction with industrial electronics, heavy bass, and molten meltdown guitar sludge to detonate minds.

What post-punk had accomplished in the late 70s and early 80s was to extend "punk" beyond rock into the avant-garde, leaving only rock's dessicated core of tension and release and manipulating that to whatever desired end. This itself was actually a recapitulation and extension of what the vanguard of psychedelic rock was doing in the 60s. With 'Vae Solis,' Scorn placed itself firmly in the lineage of psychedelic punks, mutilating rock for outsider purposes. There's was the cynical generation whose frame of reference was the amalgam of hardcore punk, post-punk, rap, industrial, and extreme metal.. Noise rock of the 80s and 90s. Of course I wasn't aware of any of this at the time I heard this album in '94, but it fucked my head up good and proper and stoked the fires once again. Unending props to Nik Bullen, Justin Broadrick, and Mick Harris for this classic.

Big album #2

Meandering into thrash just turned me into a full-fledged speed freak. Everything had to be ridiculously fast and heavy. Early Metallica was a gateway drug that led to Megadeth. Megadeth got me hardcore hooked on Slayer. That's when hardcore punk started becoming a bad habit. The path to the fastest maniacally spastic blurs of music inarguably goes through hardcore punk. Misfits, Dead Kennedys, and Black Flag joined the thrash metal ranks of SOD and early Voivod in battle for control of my mind and body. I got a mohawk. This period of escalating aural abuse of the hard stuff had been going on for about 4 years until I finally hit rock bottom.

"The end of music as you know it." Apparently that was the slogan they used to put on the banners they'd put on the wall behind them at shows when they played. The blastbeat freak-out parts that Napalm Death carpet-bombed down on the A-side of their debut 'Scum' from 1987 represented just that very thing, the end of music as I knew it. These freeform sections were the wheels falling completely off, speed and caterwaul taken to the point where it made no sense, a collapse into total chaos, a wall of noise, and the opposite of hyperactivity: stasis. The crescendo came in the .07 second epic track "You Suffer," whose LYRICS were a barked philosophical paroxysm: "You suffer/But why?" My sensibilities had broken through to the other side. This was a psychedelic experience, music working on a metaphysical level. After this all the rules changed. Fast and slow.. same thing. Loud and soft.. same thing. Minimal, maximal, long, short.. same shit. Because looked at abstractly, all these distinctions reveal a common signifier: extremity. Punk's essence is extremity in relation to any thing at any time. It's the perpetual throwing away of the rulebook. Punk is irony, and 'Scum' is so chaotic at times, it stands still.

Big album #1

The other day a lifelong friend of mine informed me via a text message that i needed to listen to some music that "isn't about hate and chaos." Naturally for a second i though he had gone completely mad; What else is there? Now, he knows my predilection for the more extreme kinds of music (and art in general for that matter), so i'm sure his tongue was planted firmly in cheek, his finger poking me square in the goddamn eye. Probably the first major impetus for me having such an aesthetic and prompting such a jibe is this: 'Kill 'em All' by Metallica.

Who gives a fuck about Metallica now? They couldn't kill their way out of a paper bag. Well on this album they were the shit. I first heard it in 1989 when i was 11 and i haven't looked back since. Sure looking back now it's just a more technical knock-off of Discharge 'Here Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing.' Fuck, what thrash isn't? This album was my first introduction to punk, to the train derailing and flying off the tracks. I played this damn tape in my walkman until it flew off the spindles and got tangled in the playing mechanism. Distorted guitars played like a ferocious mess.. an infectious, delectable dish. I pretty much was almost exclusively into all things thrash and hardcore punk from this point on for a good while because of this album.

Big song numero uno

I was a kid somewhere around the age of 7 when I first got hit between the eyes by a rock song..
